Complex challenges aren’t solved by one voice. AI belongs in the choir, not as the soloist.

In France, the author in the work at an innovation center where ideas, perspectives, and a bit of magic come together every day to unlock grand challenges.

When leaders discuss AI, the conversation often centers on tools (platform, feature, workflow) — a framing suited for the software era.

But AI is not a tool or solution; it’s a new voice in the room.

In my field of complex social impact and innovation work, no single voice (business, government, science, community) holds the answer. Breakthroughs require integrating diverse perspectives.

AI enters this ecosystem not as the answer, but as one more voice to be integrated with care.

A Threshold, Not a Training

I recently co-hosted a cross-sector AI leadership retreat for investors, founders, small business owners, scientists, change makers and nonprofit leaders. The focus wasn’t demos, but answering one question:

How do we integrate AI to amplify our leadership and impact?

What emerged were mindset shifts, not tool recommendations or AI as a silver bullet.

Three Mindsets That Changed the Conversation

  • From tools to integration: Leaders asked, “Where does this belong in the impact I want to create? What can it help unlock?”
  • From automation to amplification: The shift was toward strengthening leaders’ insight and decision-making while amplifying human judgment and creativity.
  • From solo thinking to collaboration: AI as an accelerant, helping teams and collaborations unlock new strategies, impact, and solutions — not as a replacement to teams and collaborations.

AI Is Not a Stakeholder

Let me say this one more time because it is wickedly important: AI is not a stakeholder.

AI lacks lived experience, moral judgment, a heart, responsibility, and a soul. It simulates and generates from learned patterns but does not create from nothing. Its powerful muscles of pattern recognition, rapid modeling, and synthesis require human vision, creativity, discernment, and governance.

In this age of amplification, leadership is truly orchestration. Not outsourcing what makes us human.

Work in a Choir, Not Alone

Leaders left the retreat not with tools, but with next step experiments that treated AI as one voice and not the answer.

These included:

  • Developing systems to assess the health of a company through the lens of its teams and human capital rather than just financials
  • Systems change mapping driven by community insight
  • Gamification of self-help through an AI-driven hero’s journey so that users can see where they are, their purpose, and where they are going

Ultimately, what did we learn?

AI expands cognition.

And just as they always have, diverse, big-hearted humans working arm in arm unlock solutions for a better world.
